The Trojan Varsity Baseball team dropped a heartbreaking seesaw battle to Greenfield Central by a score of 10 - 9 on the rainy, foggy, Friday evening. Chesterton Jumped out to a one run lead after Troy Barrett(3-4, R, 3RBI, 3B) tripled and scored on a wild pitch that squirted just far enough from the catcher allowing Barrett to score via the head first slide. Greenfield knotted up the game with one run of their own off starting pitcher, John Knight(IP, 2H, ER, 2K). In the second frame hot hitting Eli McClelland(3-4, 3R, 2B) reached on an error by the third baseman ahead of a G Kirkland(2-4, R, K) knock to center. With Trojan runners at first and second the game was delayed for about an hour and forty-five minutes due to lightning and rain. When the game resumed Sully Fleming(1-3, 3R, RBI, BB, K) crushed a single to right center to pack the sacks. Nate Redman(0-4, 3K) watched strike three to roll the top in star center fielder, Rob Czarniecki(1-3, 2RBI, 2BB) who battled his 6-pitch ab to draw an RBI free pass. Barrett legged out an infield single to third to drive in Kirkland. Caden Hackett(0-3, RBI, BB, 2K) earned a free ninety to plate Fleming. Ethan Glassman(0-4, 4K)had an opportunity to add some insurance runs but went down on strikes ending the threat leaving the score 4-1 in favor of the Trojans. Glass(2.1 IP, 3H, 6R, 5ER, 5BB, 4K) made quick work of Greenfield with two whiffs and a pop out. The Chesterton boys of summer would increase their lead in the top half of the third with a Knight(0-3, R, 2K) hit by pitch and back-to-back singles by McClelland and Kirkland. With Trojan ducks on the pond Fleming grounded sharply to second for a fielder's choice that plated Knight. Czarniecki stepped to the plate and hit one on the screws launching the ball like the Artemis II that arguably hooked left of the foul pole down the left field line for a loud, 110 mph, strike. After taking three pitches for balls, the Kentucky commit went with the pitch for a RBI triple to the right center gap bringing Fleming to the dish. Heading into the bottom of four, up 5, the Trojans would surrender the lead allowing Greenfield to tie the game with the big blow being a 3-run dinger that snuck over the wall next to the left field fair pole. The lead would once again change hands when McClelland smoked one back through the box, Fleming drew the free pass and Czarniecki was placed on first intentionally to once again load the bases with Trojans. Walking Czarniecki to get to Barrett proved to be a mistake when Barrett took a 1-2 curveball to right driving in a pair. Cam Campbell(1.1 IP, 0H, 3R, 2ER, BB, K) got into trouble in the fifth after retiring the first two hitters he faced. With two outs, three consecutive base on balls ended the night for Campbell and Kirkland(IP, H, 2BB, 2K) toed the rubber. A Kirkland wild pitch found its way through the backstop allowing the runners to move up 90 feet. The next Greenfield hitter promptly singled to left driving the two base runners home making the score 10-9 where it would stay. Czarniecki(0.1IP, K) was called to the hill after Strickland loaded the bases and fanned the only hitter he faced keeping Greenfield from doing more damage. McClelland would smash a double to the track in left but was left stranded in the Tojans sixth. The Trojans fall to 1-1 on the year with a Saturday matinee game scheduled for 3:00 cst against Plainfield.
