The Chesterton Trojans traveled to South Bend on Friday, not to see Luke Combs play at Notre Dame, but to play a non-conference baseball game against the Eagles of Adams High School. Right hander Dylan Bradford took the ball for Chesterton and didn't let South Bend hitters play very much at all. Bradford(W, 5IP, 4H, 10K, 71-51 pitches-strikes) fanned ten batters and walked none in his complete game shutout. Eagles hitters were only able to get four hits that came back-to-back in the first and fourth innings. The dub evens Bradfords record at two wins and two losses. Chesterton jumped out in front quickly in the first with Rob Czarniecki(1-3, R, RBI, BB, 2K) drawing a free pass in a seven-pitch AB. Troy Barrett(0-3, K, HBP) wore a heater to the elbow guard ahead of an Eli McClelland(1-3, R, BB, K) infield knock to deep short. With bases juiced, junior backstop, Caden Hackett(0-2, R, RBI, BB), went with it to the second baseman who's only play was to throw to the shortstop forcing "Chowder" out at second, scoring Czarniecki. The Eagles treated the contest as a bullpen game and shortstop Ethan Glassman(3-3, 3R, 3RBI, 3 2B, BB) greeted the new arm with a double to right center. Senior Nate Redman(2-3, R, 3RBI, 2 2B, BB) hit a deep enough shot into the teeth of the wind to advance Glass to third on the tag up. Hitting out of the double lead-off spot, Isaiah Prater(0-2, 2BB ,K) squared one up lining out to short forcing Glass to freeze at third since that's what we do with less than two outs as a base runner with a line drive hit. With two in the wagon and one draggin', Czarniecki dug in with his white New Balance kicks and cut one in half back through the middle to plate Glass. Bradford made the Eagles batters look silly in the home half of the second throwing strike 3, strike 6, and strike 9 sparking the Trojan sticks into a two-out barrel party in the third. After a McClelland K and a Hackett ground out, sophomore G Kirkland(1-2, 3R, 2BB) reached on a walk and advanced to third on an errant throw that flew down the right field line when the Eagle catcher attempted a pickoff at first. Bradford would then muscle a looping liner out to right plating Kirkland. With Bradford getting work done on the bump, as a courtesy, John Knight ran the bases for him. Glassman, The Offensive Player of the Game, smoked one that burnt the center fielder with a shot that may have been gone any other day. With Mr. Spaulding getting hit hard and far, Knight acted like Forrest Gump and just kept runninG home all the way from first. With the barrel party in full effect the next pitch got a little wild allowing Glassman to trot to third. Redman took four in a row out of the zone for a BB and Prater followed suit with his own free pass. With a Trojan in every seat at table the party got really exciting with Czarniecki showing up. Wild pitch Glass scores, next pitch squirts away from the catcher and Redman came home hard with a head-first slide and celebrated by chest bumping the home plate ump, kind of. All good things must come to an end and Czarniecki went down swinging on a forty-two MPH duece that had a spin rate slower than the disco ball hanging over the dugout. Inning over with the Trojans now leading six-nil. A fifth consecutive strikeout and a weak four-three grounder made it look really easy for the flame throwing senior in the third. The Chesterton barrel party would continue in the fourth frame with the Eagle's being great hosts to the visiting Trojans. Barrett would ground out to start the inning and ball four, ball eight, ball twelve, and ball sixteen to McClelland, Hackett, Kirkland, and Bradford increased the Trojan advantage to seven with double specialist Ethan Glassman looming in the on-deck circle. Glass doubled, again, to drive in Hackett and Kirkland for his third ribbie on the evening pushing the score to 9-0. Redman followed with a two-bagger of his own over the head of the center fielder easily scoring Knight and Glassman. Suddenly with one out and the score eleven zip, the zone grew by fifty percent causing Czarniecki and Barrett to go down looking and the party ended as quickly as it started. Chesterton would tack on two more in the fifth with the highlight being another double off the bat of Nate Redman ending the total at thirteen runs and the win streak to six straight. Chesterton will host the Slicers from LaPorte on Tuesday in a conference battle with a start time slated for 4:30 but come out early to see the future Trojan stars of State Park Little League get recognized. RECORD: DAC 4-0 OVERALL 9-3.
