The Chesterton High School boys track and field team made more history Thursday night, capturing its second straight IHSAA regional championship and sixth regional title in program history. The Trojans totaled 99 points to outdistance Merrillville (89) and Crown Point (82), using another balanced team effort to repeat as regional champions. Chesterton qualified athletes in multiple events for next week’s state finals, highlighted by a historic performance in the 4x100 relay. The team of Weston Moore, Louis Raffin, Cal Wisniewski and Nathan Vaughan raced to a regional title in a school record 41.19 seconds, the ninth fastest time in Indiana history, while punching their ticket to state. The Trojans also advanced to state in the 4x400 relay, where the quartet of Vaughan, Wisniewski, Ben Phillips and Raffin won the regional championship in 3:18.51. Chesterton’s 4x800 relay team of Spencer Martin, William Roberson, Zarek Sierazy and Ray Hundt also earned a state berth with a runner up finish in 8:00.35. Vaughan continued his dominant night by winning the 300 hurdles in 38.28 seconds, with Raffin finishing second in 39.15 as both Trojans qualified for state. Vaughan also captured the long jump regional title with a leap of 23 feet, 11.25 inches, while Wisniewski placed fifth at 22 feet, 4.5 inches to also advance to state. In the 100 meter finals, Wisniewski earned a state berth with a fourth place finish in 10.94, while Moore placed sixth in 11.04. Freshman Ben Phillips delivered a strong performance in the 400 meters, placing fourth in 49.76, while Patrick Mochen took 10th (52.18). In distance events, Spencer Martin placed fourth in the 1600 in 4:29.32. Ryan Nix added a fourth place finish in the 3200 in 9:41.77, while Nick Jakel finished ninth (9:56.75). Devin Throw finished eighth in the 200 meter finals (23.64) while in the 800, Zarek Sierazy placed 11th (2:02.86) and William Roberson finished 15th (2:05.88). Chesterton’s throwers also contributed key points in the team race. Colin Kellogg placed fourth in discus with a throw of 141 feet, 2 inches. In the shot put, Carlos Leon finished fourth at 51 feet, 5 inches and Tyler Nevious placed fifth at 51 feet, 2.5 inches. In the field events, Nolan Huley cleared 6 feet to place 12th in the high jump, while Bryan Huseman finished eighth in the pole vault at 12 feet, 6 inches. Maddox McKinney also competed in the pole vault for the Trojans. Head coach Bryan Nallenweg said, “This has been such a fun group to coach. Winning back to back sectional titles and now back to back regional titles is an extraordinary accomplishment. “Nate’s performance tonight, winning four regional titles, is something that has never been done in school history. Cal and Nate also became just the third and fourth athletes in school history to qualify for state in four events. “Getting all three relays to state is huge for this program. That’s not something that happens often, and it says a lot about this group. Everyone came ready to perform tonight. Our sprinters, hurdlers, distance runners, throwers, jumpers and vaulters all stepped up. It was another all around team performance where we exceeded expectations, and I could not be more proud of this group.”
