John “Jay” Mathias, Class of 1966 Mathias enters the Hall of Fame posthumously. A member of the Indiana Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame as of May 3, 2015, Mathias was Chesterton’s first all-state player in 1965, the year he also was named a Parade All-American. He led the Trojans to the Calumet Conference title and earned all-conference honors at quarterback. He ran hurdles and in his junior and senior seasons made it to the state meet in the high jump. A two-year starter at safety at Indiana University, he played against USC in the Rose Bowl. In 1969, Jay set the since-broken school record for interceptions (five). Jay’s father, John Mathias, was the athletic director at Chesterton, taking the position when Jay was at IU.
